In the 2023 signing class Head Coach Beth Torina signed one of the premier players in not just Texas but the entire country in Maddie McKee out of Lake Creek High School in Montgomery, TX. I was able to get in touch with Maddie and discuss her season, recruitment and more.
For the current season her stats are more than impressive.
.558 Batting Average, .613 OBP, 67 Hits, 3 Homeruns, 9 Triples, 36 RBI, 16 Walks and 63 Stolen Bases
Where does the coaching staff see her playing ? She commented " I’m a utility girl who can play both infield and outfield, there isn’t an exact position for me yet. So wherever they need me I’ll be there! " When asked what were some of her accomplished she showed she puts her team first with her reply " My high school softball team and I went undefeated (41-0) last year and won the Texas 5A state championship." She followed that up with a jaw dropping stat " I have led the state of Texas in stolen bases the past two years. And I am only the 2nd player in 10 years in the country in High School to reach 200 hits, 200 runs, and 200 stolen bases."
On who were the other schools she was heavily considering " My top 3 schools were LSU, Florida, and Arkansas. (Went on a visit to Florida the week before I went on a visit to LSU, and I was supposed to go on a visit to Arkansas the week after LSU but I committed. " I asked what stood out to her about LSU from the others schools " Everything about LSU seemed perfect for me. The coaching staff, how far it was from home, and the family environment really drew me there. As soon as I stepped on campus for my visit, I knew it was home." Regarding what girls in the class she has bonded with "I love ALL of the girls in my class. They’re all such good people and their families are amazing and I’m so excited to get the opportunity to play with them. I used to play with Mady Manning on Hotshots so I have known her for awhile. I also have grown close with Sierra Daniel who I met last summer! "
I asked her what LSU is getting in her as a player "I hate to lose and I’m a very gritty player. I will do whatever it takes for my team to win. I am fast and very versatile as I can play all over the field and am a triple threat hitter." The competitive drive spills over into her personal life. She says in her personal time "I really enjoy playing pickleball and hanging out with my family. My mom takes pickleball lessons so honestly we all go in our driveway and play against each other…very competitively."
She will more than certainly be a difference maker for the Tigers for seasons to come.
