Committed : Karmen Vazquez Goes In Depth On Her LSU Softball Commitment

When it comes to igniting the softball field with sheer talent and determination, Karmen Vazquez is a name that demands attention. Just about a week ago, LSU Softball secured an absolute gem of a commitment from this powerhouse player, solidifying their lineup with one of the top catchers in the country. Vazquez plays her travel ball with Dirtdogs Vazquez 18u Gold and her HS ball with Hanford West High School. With a Softball America ranking of No. 7 in the class of 2026, Vasquez is poised to blaze a trail of excellence in the world of collegiate softball.

Unleashing Vazquez: The Powerhouse Shaping LSU Softball's Future

Vazquez’s prowess on the softball field is nothing short of spectacular. Her 2023-2024 high school stats speak volumes about her exceptional skills - a batting average of .486, 36 hits, 29 RBIs, 9 doubles, and 9 home runs. But what truly sets her apart is her impeccable defensive game, with an impressive record of zero stolen bases allowed. It's clear that Vazquez isn't just a player; she's a force to be reckoned with on both offense and defense.

She shared with me what her brought her to commit to LSU as a player from Cali as she said "The people… LSU made me feel like I never left home, I felt a connection with everyone instantly. Coach Torina and staff bring energy and knowledge that I feel I will learn from and that I can be me." LSU isn't totally new to Karmen as she stated "I know Megann Steege who played at LSU, she graduated in 2003. My sister played for her during travel ball for one season called RBI Softball and my aunt played for her at College of the Sequoias in Visalia, Ca."

LSU won the Vazquez sweepstakes when the blue chip catcher chose the Tigers as Vazquez cut her visits short after LSU visit. She stated "I was on two visits prior to visiting LSU and they were Texas A&M and North Carolina State. I was also scheduled for a visit to UCLA on Sept 27th, but that was before I committed to LSU." She was big on her relationship with the staff as she shared "My relationship with the staff feels natural. I can talk to each one of them and it feels like we’ve been together for a long time."

She was very confident when she stated "I feel like the commitments of myself, Ayla Tuua, Addie Rackley, and Sydnee Williams is just the beginning of players seeing what’s trying to be done at LSU Softball." Another note she had for LSU fans was "I want LSU fans to know that I am a competitor and that I bring energy. I’m a fun down to earth person but I love competing and I love to win."

Unveiling the Heart of a Softball Player: Motivation, Influence, and Tribute

Regarding what attributes makes her a great catcher she says "I feel my strength, knowledge and mobility contribute to my success as a catcher. With my strength and mobility, I can move quickly and throw accurately with good force. I believe my knowledge of the game helps me make quick decisions and act on them." She shared with me some accomplishments she is most proud of "I was selected as a PGF All American as a Sophomore. I am also ranked #7 in my class by Softball America and #2 Catcher/#3 Overall by Line Drive Media."

During our conversation, she shared what motivates her as a softball player, expressing, "The drive that I have that keeps me coming back day after day is that softball brings new challenges every single time I play and I get to learn new skills to getting better." She credited her sister, Alyssa Vazquez, as a significant influence, recalling, "I grew up watching her play. I was always at the field and fell in love with the game. She played for the same travel organization (Cen Cal Dirtdogs) as me and she played at Cal State Northridge (c/o 2020)."

When we discussed what was important to her she shared something very personal stating "What is important to me is that I continue to honor and to keep my teammate Marissa Cardona’s memory alive, who passed away in 2022." #turntwoforswaggyp She

She added "I will be changing my number in college from 22 to 2 in memory of my teammate Marissa “Swaggy P” Cardona."

Fun Fact : A fun fact about me is I play water polo as a second sport for high school.
