LSU Baseball has a commitment from Class of 2024 elite middle infielder David Hogg II out of Mansfield, TX. Hogg has a Perfect Game grade of 10 and if you are not familiar with their grading system, here is a definition of their grade 10 ( Potential very high draft pick and/or Elite level college prospect). I was able to get the future tigers thoughts on LSU, recruiting and more.
Hogg is a 6'2"-190 lbs true 5 tool player and is blazing on the base paths with an elite 60 yard time of 6.49 seconds. He has all of the tools you want in a middle infielder with a 92 mph middle infield arm. For reference that 6.49 sec time is in the 99.47 % percentile for the 2024 class and the infield mph of 92 mph is in the 99.43% percentile for the 2024 class.
When we got to the topic of stats for the current season I got an interesting response from David " I transitioned to largest public school district in Texas from private school this year; earned a starting role at SS; batting either 1/2 all season. Team is still in playoffs. I honestly don’t look at stats until season is behind me (superstition)." When I asked if there was a story behind this superstition, he responded "Always a story, As a freshman I hit .500 for over half the season. I asked to see the stat line and I was first in every category, steals, walks, HR's, etc. After I reviewed thoroughly I went hit-less for two games-ended season over .400 BUT…so since then I have always stuck to not looking until it’s over. Now I gauge it more maturely by saying I have been on base 8 straight games." Out of respect for him i will leave his stats out of the article but trust me , there is nothing to worry about.
On what he feels are his strongest attribute "Team player with a very well respected glove." I asked him what are some of his accomplishments he is most proud of, he responded with "earning Gold Glove every year of my high school career as well as being selected for some premier events like Dream Series, Area Code and MLBs Prospect Development Pipeline (PDP)."
David committed to Jay Johnson back in February of 2022 and he shared his thoughts on what made him feel LSU was the school for him " Coach Jay is a legend as far as developing hitters and LSU has a winning history. My major of interest (pre-law) is there so I am excited about furthering my education. I love the atmosphere and the food." On what commitments he has bonded with he responded with "I am friends with Landon Victorian and Cade Arrambide. We have played summer together the last few years. They are like my brothers." What schools did the Tigers win his commitment over ? "My final three were: LSU, Texas A&M, and Arkansas."
Something that is always a looming threat with players of Hogg's caliber is the fear of losing that player to the MLB Draft. I asked him if the MLB Draft is something that interests him or is he set on college life and he responded with "I am excited about the future at LSU and I want to be a part of that. The MLB is a great option to have for my future as well. My focus now though is on getting the LSU tigers and Coach Jay to Omaha and lifting a trophy!"
LSU has examples that show where coming to college and having a dominant career and what it can mean for you when you get drafted. Alex Bregman was the No. 42 player coming out of high school and after a dominant LSU career he went No. 2 overall. Then there is current player Dylan Crews who was the No. 13 high school player in 2020 who is No. 1 on most MLB draft boards.Last year LSU had current Freshman Paxton Kling make the decision for college over MLB and he was the No.19 player in high school and he was the highest rated player to opt for college.
Regarding seeing a guy like Dylan Crews come to Baton Rouge so highly rated and to see he is likely going to be the No.1 pick. He had this to say "For me, Dylan Crews Is the standard. College is a time to enjoy, learn and have great experiences with friends and teammates. What better place to do that than LSU? atmosphere, food, and a great education. I’m all in."
On what Tiger fans can expect out of David Hogg in his own words " Hard worker that knows there is no I in team. I am committed to getting to Omaha every year! " Lastly, what can he be found doing when he is not playing baseball or practicing "Fishing and playing my video game." Getting this elite talent will definitely bolster this LSU roster .
