LSU Baseball 2027 Commit Devyn Downs Discusses Why He Chose the Tigers so Early and More...

I was able to catch up with Devyn Downs the 2027 LSU Baseball commitment out of Sterlington, La . I typically wouldn't reach out to someone that is just starting their Freshman season but Devyn has already shut things down and chose LSU.

I asked Devyn why make the decision so early "I've always wanted to be a Tiger for both football and baseball! My older cousin played football at LSU, Josh Downs and my brother and I was locked in ever since. Last year I began to have a relationship with the coaching staff and felt really comfortable, once I attended a camp and got to tour the facility and have continued conversations with how they see me at LSU it was a easy decision for me."

Going into his Freshman season at Sterlington the 6'1" 175 Downs is already ranked as the No.29 player overall by Perfect Game and the No.2 player in state of Louisiana. He is listed as the No. 9 shortstop and on the mound has a fastball that tops out at 87 mph.

Stats from this spring for Downs :

BA .488, 21 H, 7 singles 8 doubles, 3 triples and 3HR. Also 11 innings pitched with 21Ks and a opposing BA of .182 for the talented RHP.

When asked what he feels his best attribute is Downs replied "I think my biggest attribute is hitting for power offensively and my versatility defensively, I have played every position on the field except for catcher, I consider myself as an athlete who is really good at baseball." On if he was considering any other schools "Baseball it's always been LSU, football anywhere SEC." Downs is also an excellent football player and his elite size and athletic ability are display in the below video." Downs on playing both Football and Baseball at LSU "Playing both is my dream, I know it's a lot but my mindset is if it's been done before then I can do it."

I asked what does it mean to him to get to represent Louisiana at LSU and he stated "It means everything to be able to represent my home state and it has been a dream since I can remember to win a National Championship at LSU."

With so much time before he gets to the bright lights of the LSU campus I asked what are his goals for the future "To continue to get better each day! To maintain a 3.8 GPA or higher throughout my high school career and receive a academic scholarship on top of my athletic scholarship. Winning multiple state championships at Sterlington and playing with my brother is a dream of mine. At the end of my career I plan on being one of top prospects in the 2027 class in both baseball and football." When he isn't playing baseball he enjoys "swimming, hanging out with my friends, and training with my brother."
