Kenzey McGatlin
6'2" Blocker
2025 LSU Commitment
2023 : 10 Top 3 finishes With 8 of the 10 being 1st place finishes
I recently did a Q&A with recent LSU Beach Volleyball commitment Kenzey McGatlin out of Colorado. The LSU brand is booming across all sports and Beach Volleyball is no exception. Kenzey is one of the top players in the country as she has a AAA rating. Many probably won't be familiar with the rating system, so hear is what a AAA rating is those whose skills exceed even that of the "AA" players. The AAA player typically has had intensive training for national tournament competition at the collegiate and semi-professional levels and has obtained a regional and/or national ranking. This rating is one notch below Pro.
I asked Kenzey to describe her playing style for me and she detailed "I’m a full time blocker and i would say my best attribute is that I’m not just a power player but i work more on placing the ball around the court and being smart with my shots." She is 16 now but started playing beach volleyball at age 13. Prior to that she was on a different path as she explained " I was a competitive softball player before beach volleyball and only played 1 year of indoor volleyball, I started both beach and indoor at about the same time. I currently play indoor but only for my high school (Valor Christian High School) we won state for volleyball last season going 29-0" She added " I decided to try out a camp for volleyball and instantly fell in love and knew that is was a much better fit for me."
Regarding what set LSU apart for Kenzey "The thing about LSU that stood out to me was the amazing coaches and culture that they have built around the beach program, getting to learn about their coaching style and philosophy was huge for me. The facilities and resources are some of the best in the country and knowing that I would have access to that at any point was hard to say no to. I also grew up in a football family and having the opportunity to be around such an amazing football atmosphere is super intriguing."
We discussed her family's football background and she stated "My grandpa played at CSU and has been a long time coach and is in the hall of fame here in Colorado for it. My dad played D2 football and is the head coach at my high school, Valor Christian, where Christian McCaffrey played. He has been a head football coach for all my life so i got the opportunity to grow up with it." After asking her if she had ever been to a game in Death Valley she replied with "I have not. Just saw the stadium for the first time last week when I was out for a camp. I can’t wait to see my first game there." Kenzey will be a Freshman at LSU in the fall of 2025.
