The LSU Tigers and ULL Ragin' Cajuns both got wins in the opening round of the regional on Friday, giving everyone the match-up they wanted to see. There was a great crowd on hand to see the two instate teams face off. Syndney Berson the LSU Freshman (14-7) took the circle for LSU while Sophomore Sam Landry was in the circle for the Cajuns.
The two teams started off with both getting no runs in the 1st inning. ULL threatened to get on the board when on a fielders choice Karli Petty gunned Karly Heath down at home plate from 2B. Things changed in the bottom of the 2nd when McKenzie Redoutey put one over the right center field fence to give the Tigers the 1-0 lead.
The Tigers really opened it up in the 3rd inning when Coffey singled to right field and then stole 2nd and Briggs singled up the middle to score Coffey and make it 2-0. Pleasants singled to center field and moved Briigs to 3rd base and she advanced to 2nd. Ali Newland then singled to bring both Briggs and Pleasants in.
ULL threatened to get on the board in the top of the 6th inning when Alfred singled to left and the Cajuns had a base running snafu and over committed and a wacky rundown ensued with the Tigers getting the lead runner out and then Berzon shut the door and strikeout of Karly Heath. Berzon threw a complete game and gave up 5 hits while striking out 4 to give the Tigers the win and now they wait to see who they face out of ULL and Omaha at 1 pm tomorrow.
