Making Her Mark: Avery Hodge's Stellar Performance at LSU – A Behind-the-Scenes Look

Writer: Justin BroussardJustin Broussard

In collegiate sports, the journey of an athlete is often filled with challenges and triumphs that shape their career. Avery Hodge's journey from Oklahoma to LSU is a prime example. When she decided to transfer, it was not merely about changing schools; it was a bold move to secure her place on the field. After two years at Oklahoma with limited playing time, Avery was eager to carve out her own path, and she is doing just that with the LSU softball team.

Avery's transfer was largely motivated by the need for more playing time. In an earlier interview, she expressed her desire for impact. Fast forward nine months, and her ambition is manifesting beautifully as she excels in the dynamic environment of LSU Softball.

A Smooth Transition to LSU

I recently had the opportunity to reconnect with Avery to discuss her experience at LSU so far. "It's been really fun," she said, reflecting on her transition. "The transfer has been easy; the girls are awesome, the coaches are great, and everyone was welcoming."

Her enthusiasm is infectious. Avery has not just found teammates, but also friends. This bonding can be crucial in a sport that requires strong teamwork. The supportive atmosphere has made her transition smoother, allowing Avery to concentrate on enhancing her game rather than coping with a new lifestyle.

Filling Big Shoes

Avery's arrival at LSU came with the substantial challenge of filling the shoes of one of the program's legends, Taylor Pleasants, who is now a member of the coaching staff. When asked about this transition, Avery shared, "She works with us every single day. It's cool to have her input on things she's experienced as a player."

Having a mentor like Pleasants is a significant advantage. It allows Avery to learn from someone who has traveled the path she is now on. "I know how good she is, so it's really interesting to see her perspective on things," Avery added with admiration.

Stellar Performance on the Field

Avery has made a mark on the field with her impressive performances. At the start of the season, while performing well, she had no extra-base hits, but in just two games, she hit two triples and amassed seven RBIs.

Reflecting on her recent surge, Avery emphasized the importance of trusting the process. "It's about believing that each at-bat has its own story," she observed. "Some outcomes may not be what I want, but the next step could be different."

Avery's modesty stands out; she does not seek personal accolades but focuses on her role within the team. "I'm batting in the nine hole, so I'm aiming to flip the lineup and get on base," she stated. Her commitment illustrates her dedication to team dynamics.

Digging Deeper: A Look at Her Stats

Transferring from Oklahoma, Hodge had a .284 batting average with 9 RBIs, 11 walks, and 4 stolen bases in 74 at-bats over 63 games. In contrast, during her first 65 at-bats in 28 games at LSU, she achieved a .431 batting average, 15 RBIs, and 9 stolen bases. Avery is among many who have elevated their offensive skills under the guidance of Bryce Neal, a rising star in softball's offensive coaching. Avery shared her experience working with Neal, saying, "He is awesome to work with. He is very smart and one thing I really like about him is that he's really open to listening to how we feel as hitters and if we don't like something that he thinks we should try, like he's really open to conversations and hearing what we have to say about it instead of just forcing us to do something. He wants what's best for us, so I think that's really cool. "

As she continues to shape her path, her dedication to the team and personal growth will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact, not just on her career but also on those around her. Avery's story is just beginning, and we look forward to witnessing her continued success at LSU.
